Brass Ball Valve Leakage Detection and Repair

Brass Ball valves may experience leakage issues during regular use. Prompt detection and repair of leaks can prevent more serious problems and unnecessary losses. This article will detail how to detect if a brass ball valve is leaking and how to repair it.

How to Detect if a Brass Ball Valve is Leaking

Manual Observation:

After closing the valve, carefully observe the area around the valve for any liquid seepage or accumulation. Normally, no liquid should seep out after the brass ball valve is closed.
Use a brass listening stick or other listening device, placing it on the valve to listen for sounds of leakage.

Indicator Check:

Observe the position of the brass ball valve indicator. Normally, the indicator should point to the closed position of the valve. If the indicator deviates from the closed position, it may indicate internal leakage.

Soap Bubble Method (suitable for gas leaks):

Inject gas (such as air) at a certain pressure into the valve, apply soap solution to the suspected leak area, and observe if soap bubbles form. The area where bubbles form is where the leak is located.

Pressure Drop Method:

Connect a compressor to the valve, pressurize it to a certain value, then stop and close the valve. After a period, observe the pressure gauge reading. If the pressure drops sharply, there may be a leak; if the pressure changes little, the leak rate is low or there is no leak.

Ultrasonic Leak Detection:

Use the needle probe sensor of an ultrasonic leak detector to contact the upstream and downstream locations of the valve. If there is internal leakage, ultrasonic signals will be detected at both positions. Comparing the signal strength can help determine if there is a leak.

Temperature and Color Judgment:

Feeling the temperature and observing the color of the leaking liquid can also help judge the severity of the issue. However, this method is relatively rough and should only be used as an auxiliary judgment.

Professional Detection Instruments:

When it is difficult to judge, electronic devices such as pressure detectors can be used to detect leaks at the bottom and loading areas of the ball valve. This method is more precise but requires specialized equipment.
When detecting, one or more methods can be combined according to the actual situation to improve accuracy and efficiency. Ensure that relevant safety regulations are followed during the detection process to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment.

Methods for Repairing Brass Ball Valves

Confirm the Cause of the Leak:

First, determine the specific cause of the leak, such as the valve not being fully closed, internal seals being damaged, the valve itself having cracks, or poor sealing at the joint.

Prepare Tools and Materials:

Prepare the necessary tools and materials, including:

Wrench or pipe wrench
Seal tape or sealant
New seal ring or seal (if replacement is needed)
PTFE tape (for thread joint sealing)

Turn Off the Water Supply:

Before repair, ensure to turn off the water supply before the valve and release any residual pressure in the pipe to avoid water spraying during operation.

Check and Tighten the Valve:

Use a wrench or pipe wrench to check the tightness of each part of the valve. If a threaded joint is found to be loose, tighten it again. If the joint seal is poor, disassemble and re-wrap with PTFE tape before tightening.

Replace the Seal Ring:

If the leak is caused by damaged internal seals, disassemble the valve, remove the old seal ring, and replace it with a new one. Specific steps are as follows:

Loosen the valve nut or bolt with a wrench

Carefully remove the valve cover and take out the old seal ring.
Clean the inside of the valve to ensure no debris remains.
Install the new seal ring, reattach the valve cover, and tighten.

Use Sealant:

If the valve itself has fine cracks, use special pipe sealant to repair it. Apply the sealant evenly and wait for a period to let it dry completely.

Testing:

After repair, turn the water supply back on and test if the valve still leaks. Observe for a period to ensure no water drips out.

Professional Help:

If the above methods cannot solve the problem or the valve is severely damaged, it is recommended to contact professional plumbing repair personnel for treatment or valve replacement.

By following these methods, you can effectively detect and repair leaks in brass ball valves, ensuring the normal operation and safety of the piping system.
