The Origins & Customs of Qingming Festival
1. Historical Background
The Qingming Festival (清明节), also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day, dates back over 2,500 years to the Zhou Dynasty. It originated from the Cold Food Festival (寒食节), a day dedicated to honoring Jie Zitui, a loyal follower of Duke Wen of Jin, who sacrificed himself in a fire rather than take credit for his lord’s success.
Later, Emperor Xuanzong of Tang officially recognized Qingming as a time for paying respects to ancestors, merging it with spring outings and nature appreciation.
2. Traditional Customs
🪔 Tomb Sweeping (扫墓, Sǎo Mù)
Families visit ancestral graves to:
- Clean the tombs
- Offer food, tea, wine, and paper money
- Burn incense as a sign of respect
🌿 Spring Outings (踏青, Tà Qīng)
Since Qingming falls in early spring, many people enjoy:
- Flying kites (believed to ward off bad luck)
- Picnicking in nature
- Appreciating blooming flowers
🍃 Eating Qingming Snacks
Traditional foods include:
- Qingtuan (青团) – Green glutinous rice dumplings with sweet or savory fillings
- Cold Dishes – A remnant of the Cold Food Festival tradition
3. Modern Observance
Today, Qingming Festival remains a public holiday in China, blending ancestral reverence with springtime renewal. Many also use this time to reflect on family heritage and enjoy outdoor activities.
